A WORKING group comprising Wimmera community members has released a draft management plan for Lake Fyans and Lake Lonsdale.
GWMWater communications manager Helen Friend said the plan was developed with working group endorsement and would go to GWMWater for endorsement in August.
Submissions on the draft plan close on August 3.
Mrs Friend said the plan aimed to maximise recreational opportunities to meet the needs of current and future users, taking into consideration public safety, flood management, water quality, biodiversity and economic and social values.
The plan will also review reservoir operations including environment flow releases and advise who is responsible for short-term and long-term maintenance.
“The vision for Lake Lonsdale is that future visitors will find a well-managed day visitor and bush camping facility that provides for both intensive and passive recreational pursuits including boating, fishing, yabbying, swimming, water skiing, bird watching and camping,” Mrs Friend said.
The water level at Lake Lonsdale has been a long-running issue in the community.
Mrs Friend said the working group would consider community feedback, probably in late August, and then decided whether feedback on the management plan was adequate, or whether more feedback was required.
Lake Fyans and Lake Lonsdale Management Plan Working Group members include Tony Dark of Northern Grampians Shire Council, Allan Ralph of Grampians Field and Game, Geoffrey Swanton of Marine Safety Victoria and Leigh Edwards of Stawell Yacht Club.
