A VISION REALISED: Wimmera Uniting Care chief executive Wendy Middleton at the site of the $3-million Wimmera Community Service Centre. Picture: PAUL CARRACHERWORK will begin on Wimmera Uniting Care’s $3-million double-storey community centre in Horsham at the start of July.

Chief executive Wendy Middleton said a house in Baillie Street had been Wimmera Uniting Care’s base for more than 25 years.

She said the house would be demolished to make way for the new centre, featuring a sensory gallery, training rooms, interview rooms and community meeting space.

Wimmera Men’s Sheds have already stripped the building of shelving and air-conditioners during a working bee.

Ms Middleton said an open tender for the redevelopment would go out soon, with building to start in August.

“I’m hoping it will be a Wimmera builder who gets the contract, so I would hope that all Wimmera builders will put in a tender,” she said.

Ms Middleton said the building’s front entrance would feature the sensory gallery.

Behind the gallery will be training rooms and community meeting rooms.

The upstairs will be for tenants and visiting services including Ballarat Health Services’ child, youth and mental health workers.

Scope Victoria early intervention workers and Centacare family relations centre and youth justice will also occupy the centre.

“It’s easier to attract a service when there are good facilities, rather than visiting staff having to work from a car,” Ms Middleton said.

“There are a lot of tired buildings in the Wimmera and this new building, which will only be for the community and services, will help streamline services.

“People can come to one place, instead of having to ‘shop around’ for a service in the Wimmera.”

Ms Middleton said she would be interested to hear from community groups hoping to use the centre.

“I would like to emphasise that if there are community groups looking for a place of their own to get in touch with Wimmera Uniting Care,” she said.

“We would like groups to be part of the process so we can meet their requirements as well.”
