It is set to be a big weekend for club president Brett Harris, who will also compete.

Harris, 38, enters the final round sitting fourth in the 30-35 vets expert class and has his sights set on a podium finish.

Consistent performances in the opening three rounds see him sit six points behind the third-placed rider.

“I’m not far behind, so I’m a chance. It’d be nice to do it on my home track,” Harris said.

His previous best finish was a fourth place in the 2010 championships.

He opted not to compete last year, instead turning his attention to racing in the Finke Desert Race.

Harris described the gruelling off-road multi-terrain desert race, raced over two days in the Northern Territory, as a great challenge.

“It was really good, I finished 11th in my class and 69th overall,” he said. “None of the local blokes who went this year beat my time, so that is a good thing.”

Harris has been involved with the Horsham Motorcycle Club since he was 10.

“I love going out and getting to ride against other people,” he said.

He is in his second year as club president.

“I enjoy the track work, not so much the paper work, so I’m a very hands-on president,” he said.

Harris has even turned his passion for motorcycles into a career.

The former truck driver started a mature-age apprenticeship with Irwin Motors in Horsham in February.

“Motorbikes are something I’ve always been interested in,” he said.

“When the opportunity come up, I thought I’d be mad not to take it.”

The Victorian Senior Motocross Championships are at the club’s Dooen track on June 23 and 24.

It will kick start a big month for the club, which also hosts round seven of the MX National Championships on July 15 and round five of the MX Western Region series on July 22.
