GRAMPIANS Community Health and the Wimmera Drug Action Taskforce will host a series of preventive events during Drug Action Week next week.
Co-ordinator Brendan Scale said the theme was ‘Looking After Your Mind’ and had a strong focus on the prevention of alcohol and other drug misuse.
Mr Scale said Australian society was awash with drugs, from caffeine, medications and alcohol to marijuana and methamphetamines.
“With an emphasis on health and well-being, Drug Action Week is about people taking a fresh look at the role alcohol and other drugs play in their lives,” he said.
“Events will target people of all ages.”
Mr Scale said Nexus Youth Centre in Horsham would run a hip hop workshop from 4pm on June 21 and a hip hop concert at Warracknabeal Secondary College.
There would also be a FReeZA underage social event at Nexus from 7pm on June 22.
Stawell would also host Drug Action Week events.
“Stawell will host a community musical event at Stawell Health and Community Centre from 4pm on June 20 and the Stawell Swifts Football Netball Club will run a health and well-being program from 7.30pm on June 19,” Mr Scale said.
He said Dimboola Memorial Secondary College hosted a teen alcohol and other drug information session on Wednesday.
A free Horsham session will run at Nexus Youth Centre from 6pm to 9pm on June 20, with a free barbecue tea for parents and teens.
Mr Scale said the session was worth attending.
“Alcohol is by far the most commonly used drug among Victorian youth,” he said.
“Our free community forum will give parents practical, easy tips to talk to teenagers about alcohol and plenty of ideas to keep them safe.”
Mr Scale said people could visit Grampians Drug Action Week on Facebook for more information.
