WINNER: Jean Wise received an Order of Australia medal.WHEN it comes to community involvement in Warracknabeal, Jean Wise has done it all.
From being Yarriambiack Shire Mayor to president of the town’s Rotary club, agricultural and pastoral society, Community Enterprise Group and co-ordinator of Warracknabeal Tourist Information Centre, the list is endless.
But Ms Wise’s charitable endeavours did not take off until the early 1990s.
“I moved to the area in 1970, but for many years I just lived in the community without being involved in too many things,” she said.
“Then I became part of a program where I collated and evaluated tourism locations in the area and all of a sudden I found out what a great place the community is,” she said.
Ms Wise moved from England to Australia with her family in 1964 as part of the ‘Ten Pound Pom’ migrant scheme.
The Warracknabeal Library manager said meeting new people was a great perk of volunteering.
“I love this part of the world, because I know I have
friends everywhere I go,” she said.
“Warracknabeal is a safe, friendly town with great people.”
She said one of her biggest voluntary highlights was being made a life member of the Australian Local Government Women’s Association.
“It’s a great organisation and I am proud to be involved with them,” she said.
“I also enjoy working with the historical society because I like anything that’s old.”
Ms Wise said she was honoured to be nominated.
“I was gob-smacked. It was very humbling,” she said.
“It’s great to be awarded for doing something I love.”
