Maitland’s first touch of the London 2012 Olympic Games in London was a winning one with Simon Orchard lending a hand in the Kookaburras’ 6-0 opening round win against South Africa on Monday.

The Australian men’s hockey team simply outclassed their opponents with Orchard assisting one of skipper Jamie Dwyer’s three goals.

This takes Dwyer, 33, equal with Mark Hagar on 179 goals scored while representing his country.

Dwyer, a five-time world player of the year, scored from the spot by Dwyer, another from a short corner while he almost made it four but teammate Matthew Butturini tapped in before the ball had crossed the line.

Chris Ciriello and Glenn Turner were the other goal scorers for the green and gold outfit looking to prove the favouritism tag they have been bestowed as the number one ranked team in the world. The Kookaburras have lost just two matches at major tournaments in the past three years.

The Kookaburras’ next match is against Spain on Wednesday at 8.30am (5.30pm AEST).
