PIVOTAL: Author Barry Maitland at work. There has always been a pivotal instalment missing from Barry Maitland’s hugely popular Brock and Kolla series.

Number three in succession and titled All My Enemies, the book harks back to the early days of Detective Sergeant Kathy Kolla’s career and revisits a tragedy that has plagued her life.

But the book has never been published, until now.

“This is actually the third book in the series but was never given an Australian edition, so Allen & Unwin have decided to bring it out,” Mr Maitland said.

“And it’s quite an important book in the series because it’s the first one where Kathy Kolla gets to work in David Brock’s murder squad.”

In the book, Kolla is recruited into Detective Chief Inspector Brock’s serious crime unit at New Scotland Yard, her first case being the murder of a young woman in an affluent London home.

“Kathy is called to this murder and there seems to be some link to a particular amateur theatre group and some connection to the plays they do,” the Maitland crime writer said.

“And this has been a theme that I enjoyed writing about a lot. Within a theatre company there are a lot of love affairs happening and there are also rivalries and all that comes out in this story.

“I wrote the book in the late 1990s so it was good for me to revisit it myself, because it covers quite an important period and it also touches on Kathy’s background.

“Her father committed suicide so this book looks a little at the relationship she had with him.”

Mr Maitland is working on his 12th Brock and Kolla book to be released next year. All My Enemies hits the stands today.
