TEAM MAITLAND: Walter Bell, Pickers player Marco Delapena, Mustangs player Mitch Rueter and Janelle Hobson at the new Pickasport store which is selling sporting merchandise from Maitland teams.Plans are in motion to introduce a “super pass” that would allow local sports lovers to gain entry to any one of potentially five different teams home games.

It started with a brainstorm over lunch between Maitland Mustangs and Maitland Leagues Club general managers Chris Heath and Geoff Perkins.

Perkins said that while there was no guarantee the super pass would be introduced by the 2013 winter season, he and Heath were looking into the viability of a system that could incorporate the Pickers, Mustangs, Magpies, Rams and Blacks.

“It’s something that has been discussed; whether we could get it ready for 2013 or not I don’t know,” Perkins said.

“We would have to determine how viable it is and make sure it was equitable, so that no team is disadvantaged.”

In the meantime, the Pickers and Mustangs have joined forces to open “Pickasport.”

The new sports store, next to Maitland Leagues Club, is a joint venture between the Pickers rugby league and Mustangs basketball clubs.

Despite being named Pickasport, the store is not league orientated and sells merchandise such as polo shirts, hoodies, basketballs, rugby league balls and other supporter wear.

Heath believes the venture is the beginning of a strong relationship.

“While the different sports compete for players, local clubs are all representing Maitland,” Heath said.

“We want to take it further as well and get the hockey, soccer and union teams involved.

“A lot of the soccer guys come up and watch our games and support us and if we can get that camaraderie among the five clubs it will lead to bigger crowd support.”

“But with the store, we want to get any Maitland sports teams involved so they can sell their gear.”

Pickasport is open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 12-5pm.

Perkins said any sporting organisations wishing to sell merchandise through the store were welcome to contact him at Maitland Leagues Club.
